Rapid FDM Prototypes Service Description
Your Rapid Prototype, derived from 3 dimensional engineered drawings, will be created with the patented Stratasys FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) technologies. We use a 3 dimensional plastic printer with the ability to create simple or complex parts in a single process. This process is ideal for conceptual and engineering models, as well as for prototype testing.
About FDM - Fused Deposition Modeling
Fused Deposition Modeling technology builds durable rapid prototypes, parts or models in ABS, polycarbonate or polyphenylsulfone. It is preferable for many inventors because it can be done quickly, with high quality and for a fraction of the cost of normal product manufacturing.
We use the patented Stratasys FDM technology. The system imports STL files and automatically slices the part. The material used to build the Rapid Prototype is a high quality thermoplastic which is heated and then extruded layer by layer as the machine builds the model from the bottom up. The resulting Rapid Prototype has extraordinarily fine detail and a smooth finish.

Step 1: Powerful pre-processing software imports STL files and automatically slices the part |
Step 2: The system is setup to build the strong parts with proper build paths and support structures |
Step 3: Inside the system, thermoplastic is heated and the first 2D layer is put down through a specially designed head |
Step 4: The model is built layer by layer, with support structures included, and with each section quickly solidifying |
Step 5: Soluble support structures are dissolved in a water solution and a smooth finish is left
|
Step 6: The finished peice has fine detail and durability - eliminating outsourcing, days of time, and the cost of machining prototypes |
Common uses of Rapid Prototypes include:
- optimize invention design, spending less time and money than with a traditional manufacturing process
- cheaply evaluate invention design and functionality
- produce an inexpensive prototype which is strong enough for testing
- cheaply produce a small number (10 - 10,000) for market testing
- use while shopping your invention around to investors or licensees
- continued research and development
