Q. What is a Patent Search?
A. A patent search, also known as a patentability search or a prior art search, is the logical first step towards securing a patent for a new invention, product or process. Before applying for a patent, the inventor should make sure that the idea does not already exist or has been claimed by someone else. For more information, see our What Is A Patent Search page.
