Senior Patent Attorney

Job Description:

This position will be responsible for identifying and developing patentable subject matter invented at the company’s research and development sites; have an oversight over the company’s international patent portfolio; have familiarity with third party patents that relate to the company’s products; and must be prepared to support licensing efforts to secure any rights needed under third patent patents and to support patent infringement litigation related to the company’s activities.

Specific Responsibilities:
 Provide IP legal support to the company’s research, design and manufacturing sites
 Manage the company’s patent portfolio
 Educate and advise inventors and managers on the company’s patent processes
 Solicit and process invention disclosures
 Supervise outside counsel preparing, filing and prosecuting patent applications
 Review and approve annuity payments
 Review, and analyze competitor patents and provide IP strategy
 Provide advice on product and technology development in light of IP landscape
 Provide advice regarding infringement and validity issues
 assist IP litigation
 Support licensing and contractual activities with respect to IP
 Provide advice and counsel to management on all IP matters


Necessary Experience:

 Required Qualifications:
 J.D. degree
 Admission to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office
 Admission to a State Bar, preferable to that of the State of New York
 B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or Material Sciences
 Minimum of 10 years related experience in a corporate legal department or a law firm, with a concentration in all phases of IP practice, including substantial Experience in the preparation, filing and prosecution of patent applications
 Excellent communication and organizational skills with the ability to assume independent responsibility
 Strong negotiation and drafting skills
 A self starter accustomed to working in a fast-paced environment
 The candidate must have solid experience in patent prosecution and patent filing strategies.
 Ability to develop patent filing strategies to support the business objectives
 Ability to interface and work closely and effectively with technical and other legal personnel
 Familiarity with office and data processing technologies
 Occasional out-of-town travel required
