The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to Performing administrative and secretarial duties for two Patent Area staff attorneys in support of US and foreign patent prosecution. Assist in the daily functions associated with patent activities from the filing of the US provisional application to prosecuting it in the US and foreign countries, all the way to patent grant. Familiarity with e-filing to file routine communications such as Amendments, IDS's, Restriction Requirements, Assignment Recordation, Final Fees, etc. with the US Patent & Trademark office using the website. Work closely with the attorneys to ensure date-specific deadlines are met.


Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is required Required: Advanced computer skills (Excel, Power Point, MS Word, etc.) and operation of other peripheral devices Advanced secretarial/clerical abilities Professional communication skills A minimum of three years of Administrative Assistant experience Preferred: Patent experience as an administrative associate in a corporate or law firm setting would be highly desirable. Working knowledge of, or the ability to learn and use, software programs unique to the Patent Department, i.e. IP Manager, Infolinx,, ChemDraw and/or FastSeq, would be helpful. Familiarity with attorney docket reports to ensure deadlines are met. Professional communication skills Ability to handle multiple tasks with little or no supervision, while applying new skills and procedures specific to patent practices. Works well in a team environment. Produces/completes various work assignments requiring independent judgment, creativity and problem solving skills. Attention to detail in producing documents accurately. Work priorities and activities are reviewed with little supervision. Previous experience as a Merck Administrative Associate and experience with Merck Systems for expense reporting, purchasing, travel arrangements and other administrative systems would be a plus.
