Job Summary

Qualifications:
* Experienced licensed US patent lawyer, IP Litigator or the equivalent thereof, with well documented experience and demonstrated results.
* Preferably 8 years experience.
* Strong interest in managing and developing people and teams, including strong leadership capabilities according to the AZ Leadership Capabilities identified below.
* Thorough understanding of the pharmaceutical industry.

External Summary of Primary Responsibilities:
Description:
The Senior Patent Director will report directly to the VP IP. The Senior Patent Director is responsible for developing and directing the patent strategy within the respective iMed, managing the Infection iMed Patent Attorneys responsible for implementing the strategy and for managing the Boston Patent Assistant group. The Senior Patent Director will also be responsible for supporting the patenting needs of R&D and ensuring the appropriate patent strategy is executed for the business at an appropriate level based on the identified and agreed business needs. Accountabilities/Responsibilities
AZIP Leadership
* Active and constructive member of the IP Leadership Team lead by the VP IP, taking full responsibility for implementation and follow-up of decisions in a timely manner.
* Implement and embed the AZ Leadership Capabilities in the organisation.
* Collaborate and encourage collaboration cross-functionally and cross-site, within IP, Legal and AZ. Strategy Development
* Develop integrated strategy to protect intellectual property for emerging and developed products.
* Review current and emerging trends across all key global regions relative to the protection of IP.
* Work closely with senior R&D scientists to understand complex chemical and biological properties underpinning inventions.
* Work with the iMed team to develop plan to implement the strategy.
* Coordinate US attorney analysis and positions in relation to IP developments on behalf of entire global IP department. Resources and allocation thereof
* Establishment of Patent Attorney resources in line with agreed business needs.
* Allocation of Patent Attorney work based on skills, experience, workload and availability.
* Outsourcing of work coordinated within Patents and with other IP functions.
* Recruitment of staff when appropriate.
* Organisation, allocation and development of Patent Assistant work to efficiently support the Patent Attorneys in both the Infection and local Oncology iMed groups
* Resources need to be allocated efficiently between multiple global sites to handle evolving workload.
Management of Staff
* Performance Management, including Performance Planning and Reviews, and Individual Development Plans (IDPs).
* Reward Process including oral and written support for objective evaluation.
* Talent Management including Assessment of Potential (AoP).
* Lead professionals and staff across multiple global sites. Business related
* Participation in or delegation of membership in Business Core Leadership Teams as appropriate.
* Support to all relevant R & D projects and on the appropriate level.
* Support to SPBD initiatives, including Evaluations and Due Diligences, coordinated by the Director IP Licensing & Agreements and efficient transition and integration of in-licensed/acquired patent property.
* Keep informed of business strategies and priorities.
QA and Patent risks
* Quality Assurance including Patent Health Checks at TG2.5 and beyond.
* Identification and mitigation of all patent risks in own area.
* Responsibility for handling of all Oppositions/Appeals/Observations/Interferences within own area.
* Responsibility for communicating IP Risks to Senior Management including SET within own area. Procedures and processes
* Implementation and follow-up of new procedures and processes agreed within IP, e.g. AZ's filing strategy.
* Implementation and follow-up of new procedures and processes agreed outside of IP, e.g. Code of Conduct.
* Be instrumental in identifying, reporting and suggesting solutions to problems within IP. General
* All SHE-related matters.
