Job Description:
A small law firm in the Ayer area is seeking a Patent Paralegal to join their team.

Patent Paralegal


Assists in the preparation, filing and prosecution of US and foreign patent applications, with particular emphasis on data entry and docketing in patent department database, generation of reports from such database, and maintenance of such database.

Patent Paralegal will provide all needed administrative support to enable the firm to handle all patent matters assigned to the firm.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.

· Provide paralegal support to the firm.

· Act as liaison between the firm and in-house clients and outside firms.

· Processing of US national phase order letters from foreign patent firms (enter data into docketing database, determine responsible US attorney, create file).

· Open, date stamp and deliver all mail to responsible Attorney.

· Assist in maintenance and organization of office files and agreement database, including setting up files for non-application matters being handled by the firm and archiving inactive files.

· Reconcile and replenish USPTO deposit accounts.

· Enter travel information for all patent department attorneys into travel directory.

· Compile and distribute monthly patent department report. In connection with cases that are assigned to the firm, process documents received from USPTO and foreign agents and docket actions as needed in docketing database.

· Assist in preparing for patent committee meetings and handling any needed follow-up from such meetings.

· Compile filing and maintenance decisions and communicate such decisions to outside firms handling cases and to annuity service provider.

· Run reports from docketing database as may be requested or needed by the firm.

· Code and process invoices for the firm.

· Education and/or Experience

o Candidate must have at least 3 years of recent, relevant experience, with preference given to candidates with law firm patent department experience.

o Must be able to work independently with minimal attorney supervision on a variety of projects simultaneously.

o Must be highly diligent, capable of working in a demanding, fast-paced environment, and flexible in accepting new roles and responsibilities.

o Must have direct experience with and current in-depth knowledge of patent prosecution rules and procedures.

o Must possess basic understanding of intellectual property and contract law.

o College degree or paralegal certification required.

· Language Skills

o Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

o Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

o Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers/attorneys, other members of law department, internal clients, vendors, and outside law firms.

o Fluency in German is a plus.

· Mathematical Skills

o Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

o Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

· Reasoning Ability

o Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

o Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

o Keen attention to detail and deadlines is absolutely necessary.

· Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have highly proficient knowledge of Internet software; Spreadsheet software, Word Processing software, and patent docketing software (e.g., CPI, Quickbooks, Powerpoint, MindManager, etc.)
