The purpose of the Legal function is to provide legal services to the Group in order to further the maximisation of business opportunities and value and the minimisation of business risks and liabilities.

BP Legal lawyers and support staff work closely with their colleagues in the Businesses, Regions and Functions to deliver exceptional results in transactions, disputes and issues management.

This position reports to the Managing IP Attorney, Alternative Energy/Group Research and Technology, who in turn reports to the Chief Intellectual Property Counsel, Associate General Counsel. The attorney will be a member of BP’s Global Patent and Technology Law group (approximately 26 IP attorneys), with members in Warrenville, IL; Houston, TX; and Sunbury on Thames, UK. This position will be the tenth attorney in the GPTL group in Warrenville, among a group of approximately 33 attorneys in the Warrenville office. The GPTL group is part of BP’s Intellectual Property practice, which also includes a Trademark team. BP legal worldwide has approximately 400 attorneys. Occasional travel from Warrenville to the UK or to other business locations may be required, estimated at no more than 10% travel time

 

Necessary Experience:

 5 or more years of relevant experience. Candidates must be registered to practice before the USPTO and a member of the Illinois bar (or eligible on reciprocity with current state of bar membership). Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in a relevant technical field. Preferred technical fields are Chemistry; Chemical Engineering; and the Biosciences. Candidates must have a demonstrated capacity to overcome obstacles and use an adaptable approach to achieve outstanding results, a shared commitment to the success of the team and the wider organization, and must be able to assimilate complex and ambiguous data to identify key issues and aid decision making. Candidates must be skilled at legal analysis and reasoning, must be able to apply legal knowledge to business situations, and must have excellent client counseling and advocacy skills. Candidates must also have a demonstrated capacity to build and maintain close working relationships with colleagues and clients.
