Novartis Vaccines and Novartis Vaccines Institute for Global Health (NVGH)

Novartis Vaccines is the worlds fifth largest vaccines business and the second largest producer of influenza vaccine. With headquarters in Emeryville, California, the Company benefits patients around the world by providing products to fight more than twenty vaccine-preventable viral and bacterial diseases.

With net sales in 2009 of US$2.5 billion and employing over 5400 people worldwide, Novartis Vaccines has established a strong global presence with key centres of excellence in Italy, Germany, and the UK. Novartis Vaccines is also expanding in the US, building a large influenza cell culture plant in Holly Springs, North Carolina.

In tandem with these ongoing expansion activities, Novartis Vaccines also created NVGH in 2008 with the not-for-profit mission of developing effective and affordable vaccines for neglected infectious diseases of developing countries. NVGH is co-located with Novartis Vaccines in Siena and has access to all assets and scientific know-how used by Novartis for vaccine development. Therefore, one of NVGH's major strengths is the ability to bring the industrial best practices, the technical understanding and the physical resources needed for developing new vaccines.
The establishment of Novartis Vaccines and NVGH and the growth potential in its key business areas necessitates the strengthening of its IP function. The appointment of a Patent Attorney for the divisions Siena site will ensure greater IP coverage and aid the implementation of strategic initiatives.
The role will service the needs of the Division from a global perspective and will manage, direct and leverage the patent issues arising from a dedicated portfolio. This translates to full patent life cycle management including substantive, transactional and enforcement responsibilities. There will be an ongoing emphasis on working closely with the R&D, Legal and Commercial functions in building solid working relationships.

The candidate appointed will exhibit the following key requirements:

➢ Possess an excellent educational background to degree level or beyond in Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or a relevant subject area.

➢ Be a fully-qualified European Patent Attorney with a minimum of six years of experience. Equally, a US Patent Attorney possessing equivalent levels of work experience would also be considered.

➢ Experience in handling IP relating to vaccine research would be preferable but not essential.

➢ Experience gained managing the full patent life cycle together with a demonstrable track record in providing strategic IP advice.

➢ Fluent in English please note that the working language of the company is English. A willingness to learn Italian would be welcomed.
