Job Description:
SAGE Publications, a leading academic and professional publisher of books, journals, and electronic media, located in Thousand Oaks, California, with offices in London, India, Singapore, and Washington DC, is currently seeking Intellectual Property Paralegal.

Overview:

Provide Paralegal support for the Vice President & General Counsel (GC), Staff Counsel and Contracts Manager on a number of matters including intellectual property (copyright and trademark), litigation management, contract drafting, records retention, vendor compliance, federal government contracting compliance, legal research and limited support for other Legal Department members including assistance to Contracts Team with correspondence and documentation and other matters as assigned. Position routinely deals with highly confidential and sensitive information, a diverse group of external parties as well as internal contacts at all levels of the Company. Effective independent judgment is required to plan, prioritize and organize a diversified time-sensitive workload.

Responsibilities:

The job functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

· Provide departmental support as assigned by the GC.

· Provide internal and external customer service and act as the liaison with other members of the Legal Department and between the Legal Department and members of the Company.

· Retain solid working knowledge of the Company’s organization, policies, procedures, practices and personnel.

· Strong organization skills and ability to multi-task and work with minimal supervision as well as possess a high degree of professionalism and strong ability to maintain the utmost confidentiality of confidential and sensitive material.

· Creating, maintaining and updating confidential organizational, and department files for Legal Department, including posting documents to Legal Department section of Company Intranet site, managing documents assigned to Legal Department on the Sharepoint system and other such internal systems and working with IT to accomplish desired results.

· Manage a number of matters relating to intellectual property including trademarks and copyright issues, permissions issues, prosecution and maintenance in conjunction with outside counsel the Company’s international trademark portfolio and other related matters as needed.

· Under the direction and direct supervision of the GC, Staff Counsel and Contracts Manager, negotiate, draft and revise miscellaneous contracts, prepare first draft of responsive documents to administrative agencies and prepare drafts of other basic legal documents as need arises.

· Manage special projects including records retention, federal government contracting compliance, vendor compliance, Robinson-Patman Act discount pricing policy compliance and others as assigned.

· Manage legal fees and processing of invoices from various outside counsel and other vendors as appropriate.

· Manage Deal Database including uploading contracts and other documents into the database as a central location for all of these documents and tracking all active contracts in the database that are up for expiration or termination including the identification and tracking of key terms of such contracts.

· Performance of periodic review of internet sites where Company’s content is being offered for sale and/or free without permission (e.g., copyright infringement).

· Perform routine legal research including Westlaw and compile data, charts, legal research and reports as required.

· Assistance with and management of due diligence process for potential acquisitions and dispositions of assets and other special projects.

· Acting as internal customer support for routine questions and inquiries coming to and from the President / CEO, COO and other members of the Company.

· Other matters as assigned.

Qualifications:

Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:

· Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

· Paralegal Certificate required, minimum of 8 years experience as a Paralegal preferably in an in-house Legal Department.

· Experience managing IP issues and contracts, projects, processes and/or employees.

· Working knowledge of legal terminology with an appreciation of the importance of maintaining confidentiality at all times of confidential, sensitive information and documentation.

· Previous experience working in a fast paced, time sensitive, customer-service oriented environment with continually changing priorities.

· Strong computer skills and proficiency including all Microsoft products, Word, Windows, Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.

· Working knowledge of Westlaw and other applicable legal research tools.
