Role Summary/Purpose

In 2006 GE established a Global Patent Operation (GPO), and the GPO is headquartered in Shelton, CT. The Shelton based operation provides US patent procurement support to a variety of GE businesses as well as international patent procurement support for all of GE. In addition to the Shelton operation, the GPO also comprises domestic operations co-located at the GE Healthcare, GE Aviation and GE Energy businesses as well as international operations located in Tokyo and London.
Essential Responsibilities GE has an open position for a Patent Intern in its Shelton operation (Patent Intern). Through the experience as an intern in the GPO, the Patent Intern will have opportunities to develop the fundamental skills and knowledge required in patent practice. This is a paid position.

The Patent Intern will work with the GPO attorneys and IP paraprofessionals on a variety of patent-related projects. Specifically, the Patent Intern will:

1) conduct patentability studies for inventions;
2) prepare draft responses to correspondence received from patent offices around the world;
3) develop content for defensive publications;
4) provide the required review of GPO GAP forms prior to executing non-US filing strategy; and
5) support the GPO attorneys and IP paraprofessionals as required.
Outstanding technical and writing skills; strong interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively and concisely and work with engineers and inventors and all levels of GE management; and knowledge of laws, regulations, practices and procedures relating to procurement of patents in the U.S. and foreign countries.
Qualifications/Requirements * BS in science or engineering
* Ability to work 15-20 hours per week during the academic semester and 40 hours per week during the summer months
* 1st or 2nd year law students only (will consider 3rd year law students from evening division)
