An opportunity has arisen for a US Patent Attorney or US Patent Agent to join the UK team in Abingdon to support and actively lead the UK IP work. This facility currently comprises circa 100 employees and is in the process of undergoing a significant development programme over the next two years. Building expansion is already underway in anticipation of the facility doubling in size over the next 12 18 months. Vertex endeavours to maintain a consistent legal approach across their global operations and this role will ensure continuity with the US team which is key to the success of this strategy.

Innovation is the life blood of the Company and IP is seen to be a major contributor to the overall business with value placed on its role in the protection and development of the research carried out at Vertex.

Role & Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Senior Patent Counsel who is based in Cambridge, MA, USA.
Handling IP work emanating from the Abingdon site.
Work closely with the Scientists and Project Leaders.
Prime contact for the research based group who are mainly focussed on Early Stage activity of drug discovery
The identification for protection of patentable inventions.
The management and administration of his/her caseload
The drafting, filing and prosecution of patent applications.
The preparation and prosecution of patent applications, which will have a US focused approach, is a significant aspect of the role.
Take responsibility for implementing a patent strategy for the UK portfolio including maintenance reviews and on-going liaison with management, in order to understand and effectively respond to the needs and concerns of the business.
Managing and advising on the IP aspects of licensing and joint venture agreements/contracts in the UK and other countries outside of the USA working closely with the Legal team in the US.
Ensuring that relevant technical, commercial and, where appropriate, legal contacts are fully aware of the significance of patent matters to their own areas of responsibility.
Have a genuine interest and affinity with Vertex. The role will involve liaising closely with scientists and project managers with a view to becoming an integral member of the project team.

Possess a good degree and passion for Chemistry or related sciences. E.g. Biology.
Be a qualified US Patent Attorney or Patent Agent, ideally with between 2 - 5 years post qualification experience.
Be technically strong.
Demonstrate a successful career to date in either industry or a commercially orientated legal practice.
You will require a strong scientific background and a confident, self motivated approach to engage with the clients and exhibit passion and commitment to the science involved.
The appointee will enjoy a high level of autonomy and authority in dealing with a broad range of personnel and will be expected to display leadership qualities and an ability to be pro-active in this role.
Be a natural team-player and display excellent diplomatic and interpersonal skills, coupled with obvious abilities to liaise effectively with others at all levels.

This is a highly pro-active role and candidates will be required to demonstrate a sound level of commercial awareness and professionalism. The position is a key one within Vertex as the appointee would be the conduit through which the US IP department is able to integrate its non-US operations. It will require a candidate of the highest calibre and integrity who is able to take on the global responsibility for the innovations that emerge from the Abingdon site.
