Director Intellectual Property

San Jose/Bay Area

Director provides leadership and management to the Intellectual Property Department. The Director will work to develop and align patent strategy and licensing opportunities to achieve business goals across a range of development groups and activities. As the Director, you will effectively manage the disclosure process to extract the maximum number of inventions from development and work with the international group to maximize successful international filing of patents. In addition, you will manage the activities, quality and cost effectiveness of outside IP prosecution counsel; develop and implement processes for improving patent quality; manage prosecution charges and provide legal guidance in the area of contracts, licensing, copyrights, trademarks etc. You will manage support staff to new levels of effectiveness and quality by adapting leading edge technologies.


Work with company management and outside legal counsel to:Research specific IP-related issues, create preliminary analyses of summarize key questionsAssist with IP oriented transactions such as licensing and collaborationsParticipate in formulating and implementing IP protection strategiesContribute to patent prosecution and litigationPlans, organizes, controls, integrates and evaluates the work of the IP department, including costs, efficiency and asset management.Assess, develop and implements IP filing strategies such as areas of research, country filing-matrix etc.Develop and train research and development staff on proper IP identification procedures and protocols.Develops in-bound and out bound licensing strategies.Participates in the development of and monitors performance against the annual budget and operating plan in the IP department.Manages and directs the development, implementation and evaluation of plans, policies, systems and procedures to achieve annual goals, objectives and work standards.Effectively manages subordinate staff


BS degree in Electrical or Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics or relatedJD degree from an accredited universityRegistered to practice with the USPTO7+ years of intellectual property, licensing, and/or industry technology assessment/development experienceStrong interpersonal talents, networking skills, self-motivation, and the proven ability to work in a high pace environmentMust be able to display knowledge of patenting and licensing practiceExcellent communication skills (written and verbal)Proficient user in Microsoft Office SuiteProficient user of industry-standard docketing and file management softwareAbility to train and develop support and administrative staff
