Fujitsu Management Services of America, Inc. ("FMSA")provides administrative and financial support to Fujitsu North American companies ("FNACs"). The company offers shared services in tax, facilities, employee benefit programs, human resources and other administrative functions.FMSA also supports Fujitsu Limited, its Japanese parent company, in procurement operations.

We are seeking a Patent Secretary for our Patent Center, located in Alexandria, VA.

The person in this position will support a team of three Patent Attorneys in their efforts, particularly relating to preparing new patent applications for filing with the USPTO and prosecuting the same thereafter. As such, this person will perform various duties in connection with all stages of U.S. patent prosecution, including but not limited to the following.
Assisting working attorney in his efforts to comply with daily docket dates (including both USPTO due dates and internal due dates), including planning instances of working-ahead in order to manage variations in forthcoming daily docket loads, and ensuring working attorney is aware of any of the day's docket tasks remaining open in latter stages of business day.
Assisting working attorney in his efforts to comply witha fourteen (14) day turnaround policy, including assisting with tracking elapsed time since draft documents and/or instructions posted to FIP (web-based patent application mgmt and electronic document storage tool named FoundationIP, i.e., FIP), and planning instances of working-ahead in order to manage variations in forthcoming daily docket Loads.
Assisting working attorney to communicate with other FNACs (management and inventors) and outside patent counsel in their efforts to support invention-disclosure harvesting procedures for inventions developed by FNACs, and to support the resultant preparation/filing of patent applications as well as the corresponding prosecution of the same before the USPTO.
Preparing/saving (but not submitting) Office-Action-Response "submission packages" using USPTO's Electronic Filing System (EFS) mandated .pdf format for review by FPC working attorney.
Preparing/saving (but not submitting) Issue Fee Payment "submission packages" using USPTO's EFS mandated .pdf format for review by FPC working attorney.
Preparing Information Disclosure Statements and supporting documentation.
Preparing and filing (via EPAS) assignment documents with USPTO.
Proofreading granted U.S. patents and preparing Requests for Certificates of Correction as needed.
Drafting report of (typical) Advisory Action, and emailing same after Attorney review/approval.
Drafting response to (typical) Restriction Requirement for Attorney review/approval.
Confirming via email to JP-side receipt of instructions not to proceed further (thereby permitting application to become abandoned).
Performing New Application Documentspreparation work.
Regarding Revocation and Substitute Power of Attorney ("RPOA") paperwork, preparing, saving as EFS "submission package," reviewing, submitting, and downloading the efilingACK file (from EFS).
Proof reading bibliographic data on Filing Receipt and reporting the same via email to the JP-side.
Reporting receipt of Notices of Publication via email to the JP-side.
Reporting receipt of Notices of Allowance via email to the JP-side.
Reporting receipt of Letters Patent via email to the JP-side.
Regarding Letters Patent, reviewing selected bibliographic data on front page vis-à-viscorresponding records in FoundationIP vis-à-vis corresponding records in USPTO's PAIR database, comparing claims as issued vis-à-vis claims as expected to issue, and reporting results.
Regarding Certificates of Correction of issued patents, preparing, saving as EFS "submission package," reviewing, submitting, and downloading the efilingACK file (from EFS).
NotifyingJP-side of extensions taken (vis-à-vis a period for replying to the USPTO).
Responding to reminders and/or status requests from JP-sideincluding providing an estimation of when subject service will be performed.
Post-EFS-Submission Posting To FIPof EFS Receipt and related documents to FIP.
Reporting to client via email documents submitted to the USPTO.
Performing formality/Grammatical Correction for drafts of (A) new US patent applications and/or (B) Responses to USPTO Office Actions, such drafts originating from Fujitsu Japan/Japanese associate patent law firms.
Performing Special Projects including but not limited to file transfers, status reports, portfolio mgmt, on-line searches, and others as needed.
Providing other administrative support as needed.

A minimum three (3) years of recent experience with patent prosecution IS required.

The ideal candidate should have completed a significant amount of college-level studies, if not having earned a Bachelor's degree.

Be computer literate (which includes, at a minimum, being adept at using an Internet browser to navigate websites, Microsoft Work, Outlook and Excel).

Be a self-starter.

This person should be computer inquisitive, i.e., he/she must enjoy learning new software tools for the computer.

The candidate will need to become a master of Adobe Acrobat, FoundationIP (our web-based patent application management software) and EFS (the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's ("USPTO's") Electronic Filing System).
