Patent Agent

 Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Patent Agent will be responsible for all aspects of intellectual property management including submission preparation, coordination of outside counsel, education, analysis, and protection strategy, as well as serve as liaison to the Corporate IP group. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background with previous experience in implantable cardiac medical products, low power microelectronics, and high-reliability software.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Preparation of patent applications and filing of all papers relating to patent prosecution
* Carry out in-house prosecution and manage the prosecution efforts of outside counsel
* Provide interface and support between R&D and Corporate IP group
* Assist new product development teams in identification and protection of intellectual property
* Initiate and interpret patentability searches
* Prepare analyses of patents in regard to infringement and validity
* Provide assistance in regards to intellectual property aspects of contracts and agreements
* Collect and maintain data relating to the competitive patent landscape
* Identify and enforce Trade Secret matters
* Counsel, train, and mentor internal engineers and suppliers on intellectual property issues

REQUIREMENTS:

* Undergraduate engineering degree required. (Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Computer Science / Software Engineering.)
* Advanced Technical Degree and/or previous experience with electronic medical engineering/technology preferred
* Active Patent Agent registration with the USPTO with current, detailed knowledge of patent laws and regulations
* 5+ years of patent prosecution experience required with drafting and extensive patent and non-patent literature searching experience
* Experience with patent appeals, re-examination, re-issue, and interference proceedings is a plus
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong business sense to facilitate and appropriately manage issues between technical and legal colleagues
* Practical, hands-on experience in engineering or related field with a demonstrated curiosity and passion for medical device technologies strongly preferred
