Patent Paralegal

Life Technologies has an immediate need for a Patent Paralegal for our Carlsbad, CA headquarters. Candidates for our Foster City, CA site will also be considered.

This position entails both US and foreign patent prosecution. The successful candidate is expected to maintain a patent prosecution docket, supporting 2 to 3 patent attorneys and/or agents.

Responsibilities include:

Assist attorney(s)/agent(s) in drafting and editing prosecution documents for filing at various patent offices, including but not limited to: responses to missing parts, responses to restriction requirements, responses to office actions, information disclosure statements, transmittal forms, electronic filings in the U.S.P.T.O. and PCT Office, and correspondence to foreign associates. Monitor and participate in maintaining the databases in area of responsibility, such as the IP docketing system and other electronic and manual records to comply with patent filing requirements.


High School Diploma or equivalent required. Paralegal certificate and/or Bachelor's degree preferred.


Requires a minimum of 5+ years of experience preparing and filing with USPTO via e-filing; drafting basic patent office transmittals, responses to missing parts, information disclosure statements and responses to office actions; foreign filing experience, including PCT applications and national stage applications; and maintaining a patent docket. Strong organizational skills, comfortable with fast-paced environment, flexible and team player attitude is a must. Ability to work under minimal supervision required. Experience with Foundation IP software a plus.

Combination of law firm and corporate experience is strongly preferred.
