Job Description Obtain and maintain patents, manage patent litigation, and leverage patent activities within the Neuroscience/Ophthalmic Therapeutic Areas. Function as an employee and strategic partner of Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation business.

Major Accountabilities:

- Undertake direct patent prosecution in the USPTO and responsibility for coordination of external agents for partial global case docket of Neuroscience/Ophthalmic patent cases.
- Create patent strategies and provide patent situations which contribute to the value of Neuroscience/Ophthalmic patient oriented innovation protection and business.
- Assess and secure freedom to operate for Neuroscience/Ophthalmic projects and products from valid blocking third party patent rights.
- Maintain full accountability to Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp. CEO, Development, Licensing, and General Counsel.
- Manage external counsel in Neuroscience/Ophthalmic US product related litigation concerns.
- Training, presentation, and direction on basic patentability and product Exclusivity (e.g. Hatch-Waxman Act concerns, data exclusivity, to Neuroscience/Ophthalmic staff as appropriate.
- Review of IP related sections of Contracts and Agreements with Third Parties.
- Legal specialization of U.S. patent function (evaluation and risk assessment services).
- Ability to communicate and negotiate clearly and verbally in a cross-functional and multinational environment.
- A small amount of travel to meetings and conferences may be required (about 10%).

Necessary Experience:

 Minimum requirements

US law degree (J.D. or L.L.B.), admission to practice law in at least one US state, and patent practice registration with the USPTO.
- B.S. or equivalent degree. M.S., Ph.D., or equivalent to advanced degree obtained through experience is highly desirable.
- Proven experience (minimum of 7 years) in the preparation, prosecution and assessment of pharmaceutical or consumer products patents.
- High level of expertise in the technical areas of formulations, packaging, new uses, and routes of administration for small molecule pharmaceuticals and combinations.
- Neuroscience/Ophthalmic products experience and understanding of and ability to communicate in a fast moving business environment with short development times is preferred.
- Ability to manage budget for patent legal activities is desirable.
- Understanding of Hatch-Waxman paragraph IV certification process is preferred.
- English speaking. Ability to speak German and/or French is desirable.
