Hewlett-Packard Company has an opening for a Patent Counsel.  This position provides the right candidate an exciting opportunity to work with a dynamic team of professionals in one of the world's premier high technology companies.  This position will likely be based in Herndon, VA; Washington D.C.; Houston, Texas; Palo Alto, California; or Murray Hill, New Jersey; although other US-based locations may be considered as well. 
 
About the Job
 
This position is in the Patent Development group of the HP Legal Department. The successful candidate's responsibilities are expected to include the following: 

  • Preparing and prosecuting strategic, high quality patents protecting HP's products and services

  • Actively participating in HP's invention disclosure review process to help assure that HP's best inventions are identified and patented

  • Assigning patent preparation and prosecution matters to a group of outside counsel and supervising their work product to assure it meets HP's standards of quality, timeliness and cost 

  • Working closely with HP scientists and engineers to identify and protect inventions that are important to HP

  • Becoming the expert in the Legal Department for a specific patent portfolio

  • Participating as a member of a cross functional team to provide support in licensing, litigation, or other matters

  • Mentoring less experienced members of the HP Legal Department

Travel is expected according to business needs and should be less than 5% of the time, most typically to other HP locations in the US.

Necessary Experience:

About the Candidate

The successful candidate is expected to possess the following qualifications:
Admission to the USPTO

BS degree in an Engineering discipline (e.g., Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering), or Computer Science

JD degree from an accredited university, and admission to a state bar

5-10 years experience as a patent attorney

20+ original patent applications personally prepared in the past 36 months

Strong academic credentials

Experience in a large corporate environment, as an attorney and/or engineer

Ability to work with clients in a team-oriented partnership to help them arrive at elegant solutions to their problems

Flexibility to accept new and different challenges in a fast paced, high tech environment

Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing

A positive attitude

A creative spirit
