VP, Associate General Counsel - Patent Asset Development

Want to help guide the patent asset development strategy for those technologies? If so, we are looking for you. 

Yahoo! is recruiting for a VP, Associate General Counsel to lead its Patent Asset Development Team. Candidates will have 12-15+ years of solid experience in patent prosecution and IP strategy, and will have managed other patent, IP and technology professionals. The successful candidate will lead a geographically distributed team of attorneys, engineers and paralegals responsible for identifying and developing patentable subject matter within the company, as well as providing ongoing management and prosecution oversight for a significant international portfolio. The position also requires close collaboration with other IP executives and legal colleagues on a range of issues concerning patent-related disputes, policy, analysis, due diligence and transactions. Accordingly, litigation, licensing and transactional experience is a definite plus. 

Candidates should have excellent judgment and communication skills, a commitment to best-in-class claims quality, and be comfortable in a fast-paced, diverse work environment —relating well with other team members, business and technology executives, inventors and outside counsel. Strong candidates will have both in-house and law firm experience, a passion for Internet technologies and strong leadership, with team and project management skills. 

Core Responsibilities: 

• Collaborating with the VP of IP and IP Executive Team on various facets of IP strategy, portfolio development, patent deployment, licensing and general IP asset management 

• Advising senior management, technical and business stake holders on patent related issues 

• Working with senior leaders and executives to coordinate Yahoo!’s patent portfolio with business strategy across a variety of global business units 

• Determining and participating in various reform efforts, including patent-reform coalitions and amicus efforts 

• Setting and managing company budget for patent matters, including development and allocation, and ensuring company goals are met 

• Setting strategy for patent filings (e.g., new cases, strategic follow-ons, and pruning and foreign filing decisions)

• Driving strategic patent development events and processes for the company 

• Coordinating with inventors and business professionals throughout the patent process 

• Overseeing large patent prosecution docket with in-house counsel, paralegals and outside counsel 

• Managing professional development of team of IP professionals 

• Spearheading internal education initiatives and team trainings 

• Collaborating and working with IP executives on licensing strategies 

• Providing legal counseling and strategic guidance on open source issues and working with a cross-functional team of engineers and attorneys addressing risk management and operational integration related to open source 




Necessary Experience:


• Excellent academic credentials and membership in at least one state bar

• Proven leader with 12-15+ years IP experience and significant management experience

• Strong communication skills with technologists and senior business executives

• Experience managing in-house counsel, engineers and/or product managers, as well as counseling and educating engineers and technologists

• Experience identifying patentable subject matter and managing patent portfolios

• Blend of law firm practice and in-house leadership experience

• USPTO Bar Admission and technical degree in relevant scientific field strongly preferred

• Strong understanding of Internet architecture and technologies relating to company products and overall business preferred

• High personal standards of excellence; strong IP and business acumen with ability to think strategically, cooperate effectively and influence and lead all levels
