The role: Patent Counsel

As a Patent Counsel, you have the unique opportunity to help mold the world-shaping technologies that the company is developing. At the top level, you'll work with a variety of teams to protect Google's rights under patent law, but a significant part of your work will be to collaborate with and guide engineers, product developers, and executives, with your eye squarely focused on patent issues. You'll also help devise and implement the company's patent strategy, which includes managing outside counsel on patent issues. You'll also work with other Legal teams on licensing, negotiating, and other transactional deals. You'll work with an invigorating, inspiring team of innovators who are passionate about future technologies and excited about resolving their ensuing legal challenges.

Necessary Experience:

Determine strategic areas for patenting.
Identify inventions that can be patented.
Assist with patent litigation and analyzing/responding to notice letters.
Evaluate potential acquisitions.
Educate researchers and engineers on patent issues.

BA/BS degree preferred with a strong academic record (computer science/information retrieval preferred).
At least 3 years of related work experience.
State bar membership and eligibility to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Demonstrated experience identifying technologies that can be patented and processing patent applications.
Solid understanding of Internet architecture and operation.
Experience with business strategy and with third-party issues preferred.
Strong interpersonal and team skills.
