This Patent Attorney position will be located at Wrigley's Global Innovation Center (GIC). The Patent Attorney will report to the Chief Patent Counsel. The Patent Attorney will support various Innovation groups (located at the GIC and other locations) that develop and implement new and improved products and processes for Wrigley's global products slate. The Patent Attorney will coordinate with experienced Patent Scientists to work directly with Innovation personnel so that the Attorney and Patent Scientist team cooperate to deliver the full complement of IP-related legal services to the assigned Innovation group(s).
The position requires substantial experience in patent drafting, prosecution and analysis, as well as broader experience in intellectual property related transactions and litigation. Commercial transactional or litigation experience is a plus. A successful applicant will be self-motivated to maintain awareness of legal and technical issues relevant to the position, as well as having a strong interest in the underlying business, to provide pragmatic, cost-effective, business-friendly solutions to the IP issues that arise.

Responsibilities:

1) Works with assigned Innovation group(s) and Patent Scientists to conduct preliminary patent searches, identify potentially patentable subject matter, draft, file and prosecute patent applications, and perform Freedom to Operate analysis and related client counseling for assigned Innovation group(s).
2) Works with Patent Scientist to provide competitive intelligence and pro-active IP strategy counseling to assigned Innovation group(s).
3) Works with assigned Innovation group(s) to draft and negotiate research agreements and other IP-related contracts.
4) Manages and provides counseling on trade secret and confidentiality-related matters for assigned Innovation group(s).
5) Coordinates with other Law Department personnel to provide IP-related support for transactions and client counseling.
6) Participates in intellectual property aspects of licensing, M&A and commercial activities as assigned by Chief Patent Counsel.
7) Manages litigation-related activities as assigned by Chief Patent Counsel.
8) Develops and supports IP training for Innovation groups and business and commercial operations as assigned.

 

Necessary Experience:

 Requirements:
1) J.D.
2) Licensed to practice law in a US jurisdiction
3) Licensed to practice before the USPTO
4) Undergraduate degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Food Science, Physics or Engineering Physics or Mechanical Engineering (with significant chemistry experience or training) Biology or equivalent
5) Four or more years of IP-related legal experience with emphasis on patent prosecution (in-house preferred)
6) Outstanding written and oral communications skills
7) Outstanding interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to function well in a multi-disciplinary team environment
